Where Tea is Grown

We have identified the following list of 61 tea producing countries across the globe. To be included, a country must have at least one functioning commercial tea plantation.

Argentina

Argentina is the tenth largest producer of tea in the world and the largest tea producer in South America.

Australia

Tea has been grown in Queensland, Australia since 1884. Today, there are a few small gardens remaining in Queensland as well as a commercial producer of Japanese-style green tea in Victoria.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is the fortieth largest producer of tea in the world.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh is the twelfth largest producer of tea in the world.

Bhutan

Tea production exists in Bhutan outside of Trongsa. One notable garden is Samcholing Tea Estate.

Bolivia

Bolivia is the thirty-fifth largest producer of tea in the world.

Brazil

Brazil is the thirty-fourth largest producer of tea in the world.

Burundi

Burundi is the fourteenth largest producer of tea in the world.

Canada

To our knowledge there is only a single producer of specialty tea in Canada, Westholme Tea Farm on Vancouver Island.

Cambodia

Small amounts of tea are produced near Kirirom mountain, the site of a large tea production that was wiped out by the Khmer Rouge.

Cameroon

Cameroon is the twenty-seventh largest producer of tea in the world.

Chile

Chile is home to the Southern-most tea plantation in the world, Salus Tea Plantation.

China

China is the largest producer of tea in the world. China is the birthplace of specialty tea and the diversity of tea styles produced there is unparalleled.

Colombia

Colombia is the forty-fifth largest producer of tea in the world. A notable producer of specialty tea in Colombia is Bitaco Tea Estate.

Congo

Congo is the twenty-ninth largest producer of tea in the world.

Ecuador

Ecuador is the thirty-sixth largest producer of tea in the world. The largest tea producer in Ecuador is Te Sangay.

El Salvador

El Salvador is the thirty-ninth largest producer of tea in the world.

England

Tregothnan tea estate produces tea outside of Truro, England.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is the twenty-fourth largest producer of tea in the world.

Georgia

Georgia is the thirty-second largest producer of tea in the world.

Germany

There are a few small experimental tea growing projects in Germany. A notable producer of specialty tea is Tschanara, located in the Bergischer Highlands near Cologne.

Guatemala

Guatemala is the forty-first largest producer of tea in the world.

India

India is the second largest producer of tea in the world. Much of India’s tea production is concentrated in the areas of Assam, Darjeeling, Nilgiri and Dooars.

Indonesia

Indonesia is the seventh largest producer of tea in the world.

Iran

Iran is the eighth largest producer of tea in the world.

Japan

Japan is the eleventh largest producer of tea in the world. Much of Japan’s production is green tea.

Kenya

Kenya is the third largest producer of tea in the world.

Laos

Laos is the twenty-fifth largest producer of tea in the world.

Madagascar

Madagascar is the forty-second largest producer of tea in the world.

Malawi

Malawi is the Fifteenth largest producer of tea in the world. A notable producer of specialty tea from Malawi is Satemwa Tea Estate.

Malaysia

Malaysia is the twenty-third largest producer of tea in the world. Malaysia is home to the largest tea plantation in Southeast Asia, the Boh Tea Plantation in the Cameron Highlands.

Mali

Mali is the forty-seventh largest producer of tea in the world.

Mauritius

Mauritius is the thirty-third largest producer of tea in the world.

Montenegro

Montenegro is the forty-sixth largest producer of tea in the world.

Mozambique

Mozambique is the eighteenth largest producer of tea in the world.

Myanmar

Myanmar is the ninth largest producer of tea in the world.

Nepal

Nepal is the twenty-first largest producer of tea in the world. One notable producer of specialty tea from Nepal is Jun Chiyabari.

New Zealand

There is only one major tea producer in New Zealand, Zealong. Zealong is a producer of high quality wulong and black teas in Hamilton on New Zealand’s North Island.

Nigeria

There are several tea producers in Nigeria, including a tea plantation owned by Lipton in Agbara.

Pakistan

The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council states that tea is being produced in Pakistan. It claims that the most suitable areas for growing tea are the districts of Mansehra, Battagram, Swat and AJK.

Panama

Panama is the forty-fourth largest producer of tea in the world.

Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is the twenty-sixth largest producer of tea in the world.

Peru

Peru is the twenty-eighth largest producer of tea in the world.

Portugal

Portugal is the forty-eighth largest producer of tea in the world. A notable tea producer in Portugal is Cha Gorreana on the island of S. Miguel that has been in operation since 1883.

Réunion

Réunion is the thirty-eighth largest producer of tea in the world.

Russia

Russia is the forty-third largest producer of tea in the world.

Rwanda

Rwanda is the twentieth largest producer of tea in the world.

Scotland

Small tea farms have begun to pop up across Scotland. The first was Wee Tea Plantation. In 2016, a Scottish Tea Growers Association was formed.

Seychelles

Seychelles is the forty-ninth largest producer of tea in the world.

South Africa

South Africa is the thirty-first largest producer of tea in the world.

South Korea

South Korea is the thirtieth largest producer of tea in the world.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the fourth largest producer of tea in the world.

Taiwan

Taiwan is the Twenty-second largest producer of tea in the world and is known primarily for the production of wulong teas.

Tanzania

Tanzania is the seventeenth largest producer of tea in the world.

Thailand

Thailand is the sixteenth largest producer of tea in the world. The areas around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the major tea producing regions in Thailand.

Turkey

Turkey is the sixth largest producer of tea in the world. Turkey’s tea production in concentrated in and around Rize Province.

Uganda

Uganda is the thirteenth largest producer of tea in the world.

United States

There are many small tea farms in the United States, the largest is in South Carolina and is owned by Bigelow. The largest concentration of tea producers is in Hawaii.

Vietnam

Vietnam is the fifth largest producer of tea in the world.

Zambia

Zambia is the thirty-seventh largest producer of tea in the world.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is the nineteenth largest producer of tea in the world.
